SCHOOLHOUSE UPDATE

With the help of donations and the Dr Robert S and Dorothy Q Harden Trust the Sand
Hill One-Room Schoolhouse on Tange Road now has a new roof, and the schoolhouse
has been painted in and out. EHS volunteers helped with the cleaning and will soon be
able to replace the school desks, chairs, bookcase, and teacher’s desk in the
schoolroom. André Garand and Betsy Bartlett have cleaned and refinished the floor. The
backroom addition added years ago by the Grange, has been gutted, insulated, has new
wiring, bathroom, and kitchen. It will be used for EHS Board Meetings and hopefully
computer classes or other educational endeavors. The Edinburg Common School
children visit the school when they are learning about Edinburg history. EHS was Willed
the property by Roy Pearsall knowing EHS would maintain the historic Sand Hill One-
Room Schoolhouse for future generations.

April 2021 Update

The Edinburg Historical Society held a board meeting in April.

On Saturday, May 1 at 9 a.m. EHS is looking for volunteers to help clean the floor of the Sandhill one-room schoolhouse and clean the schoolhouse garage. You do not have to be an EHS member to volunteer your time. Trucks and some muscle will be needed to transport some display cases from the school garage to the Rural Museum.

EHS would also like someone to volunteer their time to build book nook or “take a book/leave a book” that will be located at the Rural Museum located next to the Edinburg Volunteer Fire Company. Material costs will be reimbursed.

EHS will not be asking for any membership dues again this year, but a contribution would be appreciated. Current board members whose terms have expired have agreed to continue their duties until the end of the Covid restrictions when the membership is able to meet and vote on the candidates.

TWO SALAD AND BAKE SALES are scheduled for Saturday, May 29 and Saturday, July 10, both from 9 a.m. to noon to supplement the EHS income derived from our two Festivals that have been put on hold due to the Covid virus. EHS maintains two museums, the Copeland site, and the Sandhill one-room schoolhouse.

AT THE RURAL MUSEUM ON NORTH SHORE ROAD

Due to COVID-19, The Edinburg Historical Society has cancelled all their monthly meetings and museum activities for the year including the Historic “Edinburgh” Day and the Edinburg Fall Festival. These two festivals in July and September are the only fundraisers that EHS has during the year.

To compensate for the loss of funds from the festivals, EHS will hold a bake sale and salad sale on Saturday, September 5th from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Masks are mandatory along with social distancing.  An assortment of cookies, pies, fudge, and breads will be available along with the potato, pasta, and macaroni salads. Please support EHS by dropping by and picking up the prepackaged cookies, candy, and salad.

We have had many visitors at the Copeland Covered Bridge so far this year. If you visit the bridge and have purchased a share in someone’s name, please be sure to check the names in the bulletin board at the bridge. EHS took on the job of copying all the names from the sign that was deteriorating and the listing has not been proof-read yet. If you find an error or your name(s) is missing, please contact Marge Ludwig using the above address. Please note that it is alphabetized by the first name of the individual but will be listed alphabetically by the last name before the permanent listing is completed. Please note that the old picnic table has been replaced at the Copeland Covered Bridge so plan on using it this summer.

Your donation of $25 will purchase a Copeland Site share in someone’s honor, a birthday, anniversary, or graduation or in memory of a loved one. Send your check for $25 to the Edinburg Historical Society, PO Box 801, Northville, NY 12134 with the person’s name; whether the donation is in honor of, in memory of, for yourself, or as a gift; and with your name and address to receive an acknowledgement of your donation. TO ALL OUR MEMBERS AND THOSE THAT WOULD LIKE TO JOIN – we will not be collecting member dues of $5 for an individual or $10 for a family this September. If, however, you wish, you may send a donation to the address above.

In memory Of Roger Hoff

The Edinburg Historical Society has lost an active and longtime member. Roger loved his summering in Edinburg for a good portion of his life, beginning in the 1940s, when he vacationed at the Palmer place on Pucker Street and continuing after he bought Ross Mack’s house on North Shore Road in 1980.  Sitting on the backscreen porch listening to the music of Beecher Creek was his happiest time.  He enjoyed sociability with the Lathers, Fred Brownell, Dona and Marshall Robinson in Beecher Hollow and with all of his friends in the Edinburg Historical Society.

Roger held various positions while a member of EHS, staffing the museums, helping with the acquisition and preservation of the Copeland Covered Bridge, co-chairing the Edinburg Walking Tours, chairing the Nominating Committee for many years, and doing physical jobs like sealing the floor of the Rural Museum.

In 2001 Roger invited antique dealers for an end of the year sale at the Rural Museum and that started the Annual Edinburg Fall Festival. Roger donated his 1917 Old Time Canoe for the Hunting, Fishing and Trapping exhibit. With his wife, Kathy they did a layout of the Rural Museum. Both Kathy and Roger were given the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2011 and in 2018 were honored to become Lifetime Trustees.
